The Dickinson High girls hockey team was within reach Tuesday night.

That was until Williston tore off an eight-goal gash in the second period.

The Coyotes used the period to defeat Dickinson 12-2 in a North Dakota state standings game at the Dickinson Recreation Center.

"The way it started out, Dickinson were playing their positions real well," Williston head coach Mat Ekblad said. "They were plugging up the passing lanes. We were overloading sides. We made our adjustments and spread out the ice a little more. That's what the difference was between the first and second periods."

Williston led 2-1 to open second period and rattled off four goals in a matter of 5 minutes, 27 seconds.

"The girls started out the strongest they've ever played," Dickinson head coach Lauren Hansen said. "In that second period, we just lost our balance a little bit. But they kind of pulled it together in the third."

Dickinson's main culprit was the penalties, which turned into power-play goals.

"In the first period, we were all working together and communicated well," Dickinson sophomore Kayla Wallace said. "We kind of gave up after they started scoring."

Sam Miller led the Coyotes with four goals, including three in the second.

Williston's Keely Kleven netted three goals, while Jordan Hill added two goals and one assist. Morgan Watterson supplied a pair of goals.

"Since Dickinson was plugging up the passing lanes, we had our defenseman take the puck up the ice and obviously Miller found the back of the net a few times," Ekblad said. "She's such a strong skater that she can skate through the stick checks."

Dickinson, however, wasn't quiet around the net.

Kayla Wallace netted a goal in the first period to tie the game 1-1 and Kira Zastoupil added a goal in the second period. Williston held the shots-on-goal advantage after the first period 14-11. Along with the goals, the Coyotes exploded for a 33-15 shots-on-goal advantage in the first two periods.

"It was pretty exciting scoring a goal, but I have to give Kira a lot of credit," Wallace said with a smile.

Williston was able to get an eighth- and seventh-graders varsity time in the net.

Maddy McLees faced 15 shots on goal through the first and second periods. Kenon Schmit took over in the third period and saw five shots.

The Midgets also used a pair of goalies in junior Paige Fahlstrom and sophomore Kelsey Gillen. Fahlstrom saw 33 shots through the first two periods and Gillen stopped three of the five shots she faced in the third.

Dickinson continues its season next Tuesday when it travels to Sidney, Mont., at 5:15 p.m.
