Wolf leads Bowman County in consolation
MINOT -- Bowman County used a patient inside-out attack led by senior center Alex Wolf's game-high 26 points to dispatch Berthold 58-45 in the Class B state boys basketball tournament consolation bracket.
Wolf shot 13-for-15 from the field and added nine rebounds to his 26 points while teammate Brock Boos scored for 11 points for the Bulldogs, who play Watford City for fifth place at 3 p.m. today at the Minot State Dome.
Bowman County head coach Gary Ballard said the Bulldogs patient attack is by design.
"We do that and a lot of it is because of our size," Ballard said. "We do it because we want to develop our inside game to take advantage of our size. We have three good post players in there and Alex has really been on a tear lately.
"He's pushing real hard and when he gets the ball he puts it back up in a hurry. We stress the inside, but you still have to have some outside when they pack it in."
The Bombers did a decent job defensively in the first half even though they got off to a slow start.
"We came out snoozing and it took us 2½ quarters to wake up, which was unfortunate," Berthold head coach Brock Teets said. "But I think our kids were pretty disappointed to be playing in the sunshine bracket. It took them a while to get going, but I was proud of the way they played in the late third and fourth quarter. We played hard like we usually always do."
Bowman County took a 10-9 lead after one quarter and extended it to 22-13 at halftime.
Ballard was pleased with the start and his team's readiness.
"It's a tough thing to come back after the loss, but it helps when you have a lot of senior leadership like we do," Ballard said. "They talked about it last night and they all wanted to come out and play their best and it showed."
After being held to just 13 points in the first half, the Bombers found themselves down 41-21 with 35 seconds remaining in the third quarter, but their pressure in the fourth quarter led to a run that cut the lead to 52-42 late in the fourth.
The 10-point deficit was as close as the Bombers could get as they fell into the seventh-place game against North Star at 1 p.m. today.
Matt Yale led the Bombers with 15 points, while Michael White had nine with seven rebounds and Lyndon Bloms, Luke Hennessy and Lucas Bloms all had five in the loss.
"(Thursday) night was an emotional loss, but it's not an excuse," Teets said. "Bowman is a good team and they beat us hands down. But we didn't play our style of basketball for a lot of the game."
