ND tribe gets tough on improper oil waste disposal

NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) -- The Three Affiliated Tribes is cracking down on improper waste disposal by oil companies on the Fort Berthold Reservation in western North Dakota.

The tribe has implemented fines that start at a few thousand dollars and progress to a million dollars. Companies that refuse to pay or have repeated violations could lose their license to do business on the reservation.

Tribal Attorney John Fredericks tells the Minot Daily News that improper dumping is happening on a regular basis. Tribal spokeswoman Glenda Embry says the tribe had nothing in place to deter it before the fines.

The tribe's Environmental Division is developing rules to better manage waste disposal on the reservation.
