Ruth Chastek

The funeral services for Ruth G. Chastek, 97, Dickinson, formerly of, Hazen, are at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2008, at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson, with the Rev, Steve Schou officiating.

Burial is in the Dickinson Cemetery.

Ruth passed away Saturday, March 1, 2008, at St. Luke’s Nursing Home, Dickinson.

Ruth G. (Soland) Chastek was born June 29, 1910, the daughter of Alfred and Julia (Ramstad) Soland on the family homestead south of Hazen.

She attended Hazen Public Schools, and graduated from Hazen High school in 1928.

She then attended Dickinson State University and graduated in August 1933 with a second grade professional certificate.

Ruth then began teaching school in both Mercer County and Bottineau County for the next seven years.

On June 23, 1935, Ruth and Joseph Chastek Jr. were united in marriage in Hazen.

Together, they made Dickinson their home. Ruth worked at the S.H. Green Stamp Company for 18 years, along with raising their daughter, Karen.

Ruth’s church and faith were very important to her, as she was the first child to be baptized and confirmed in the church originally called the Norwegian Lutheran Church, Hazen, and has been an active member of the Lutheran Church her entire life.

After her retirement, she did volunteer work for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Karen (William) Cedar, Columbia, Mo., and two grandchildren, Kevin (Heather), St. Louis, and Rebecca, Dallas; and two great-grandsons, Blake and Chad Cedar.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph; and a brother, Herbert Soland.
