DICKINSON - Mike Schatz, the executive director of the North Dakota Republican Party, is running for state representative in District 36, said local party chairman Duane Urlacher on Tuesday.
Schatz, a former high school football coach and teacher from New England, served in the North Dakota House from 1989 to 1990.
The party, which held its nominating convention in February, waited several weeks for another candidate to step forward. But when no one did, Schatz was tapped to run, Urlacher said.
It is not clear how this decision will affect his job with the party. Schatz did not return a phone message left by The Dickinson Press on Tuesday.
Frank Klein, of rural Dickinson, is the other party candidate running for representative. George Nodland, also of rural Dickinson, was endorsed to run for state senator.
District 36 includes rural Stark County and parts of Morton, Hettinger and Dunn counties.
