Dickinson State has eight applicants it is considering for its vacant head volleyball coach position athletic director Roger Ternes said Thursday.
Among them are the assistant coach for the U.S. national women’s volleyball team, the former assistant coach at National American University and the current assistant volleyball coach at the University of Montana.
“We’ve got a number of qualified applicants and we hope to be reviewing them over the weekend and maybe have … the interview process start before the end of the month here and have some people visiting campus,” Ternes said.
The applicants are:
E Fernanda Nelson was a two-time NAIA national volleyball player of the year before becoming NAU’s assistant coach. She was vital to the school’s recruiting of international players. NAU cut its volleyball program in March.
E Yong (James) Li is entering his fourth year as assistant coach for the U.S. women’s national team. He has helped the team to a 68-38 record in his first three years with the program. A native of China, Li served as an assistant coach on China’s national women’s volleyball team from 1991-98. He assisted the Chinese to a silver medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. He joined the U.S. team in 2005.
E Ryan Platt is wrapping up his second year as the assistant coach to Jerry Wagner at Montana. Platt has been a head coach at the NAIA level. He coached Eastern Oregon for three years and was an interim head coach for Lewis & Clark, where he served as an assistant coach.
E David Gantt is a former head coach at both Oregon State and Montana State. He spent two years at Oregon State in 1991 and 1992 and compiled just a 29-36 record. He has also coached at Montana State-Northern, where he was the athletic director from 2005-2006.
E Steven Dallman is currently the head coach at NAIA University of Virginia-Wise. He is the former head volleyball coach at NCAA Division I University of Missouri-Kansas City.
E Austin Dyer is the assistant volleyball coach at the University of Saskatchewan-Saskatoon.
E Brandon Reeves is a graduate assistant volleyball coach at Tennessee State.
E Kristen Kolter is a graduate assistant volleyball coach at Union University in Jackson Tenn.
“Overall, I think a pretty solid group,” Ternes said.
Dave Moody, the winningest volleyball coach in DSU history, announced he was resigning after 18 years on April 1.
