A Rosary Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hettinger.

Martin was born on November 23, 1923 at Hettinger, ND to Bernard and Frances (Jacob) Slater. Martin was a lifelong Hettinger resident. He spent many years living and working with his brother Paul (Sally) and their family as well as farming his own land.

On February 7, 1970, Martin married Janice Metz at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dickinson, ND. The following August their only daughter was born. Martin shared his life with Janice until she passed away on April 25, 1979.

Martin loved nothing more than the smell of the air on the open prairie and the sunshine on his face. He spent countless hours clearing the rocks off his land to make it all farmable. His tremendous generosity will be remembered by both his family and community. He will be greatly missed by many.

Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter, Gayle (Andy) Kalmbach of Rapid City, SD along with his two grandchildren Alex and Kaylee; sister-in-law Sally Slater of Hettinger, ND along with her children Kenny Slater of Williston, ND, Lori (Jeff) Trautwein of Dakota City, NE, Alan Slater of Fargo, ND and Larry Slater, Connie (Rod) Enerson, and Mark (Laura) Slater all of Hettinger, ND; four brothers; John Slater of California, Arthur (Billie) Slater of Fort Worth, TX, Dr. Donald and the late Marie Slater of Scottsdale, AZ and James (Betty) Slater of Bristow, VA; five sisters, Agnes and the late Joe Paul of Lemmon, SD, Lorraine (Mike) Kuntz of Hardin, MT, Loretta Grossnickle of Portland, OR, Margaret and the late Ted Borgheiinck of Randall, MN and Caroline (Martin) Borgheiinck of Milbank, SD. Other special people in Martin’s life include all of his nieces and nephews, members of the Metz family and all of his friends.

Martin was preceded in death by his wife Janice, two brothers; Paul and Bernard, and his parents.

Martin passed from this life on the same day his grandson celebrated his 11th birthday. We believe his final gift to us is to remember and respect the sacredness of both life and death and always remember the importance of family.

Visitation will be Tuesday 1:00 to 6:00pm at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Hettinger.

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.evansonjensenfuneralhome.com.
