BISMARCK — The Dickinson High girls basketball team may have lost on Thursday, but coach Greg Jung said he was certainly pleased with the effort.
Second-ranked Bismarck Century got 19 points from Madi Buck as the Patriots rallied past the Midgets 50-40 in a West Region girls basketball game.
“I was really proud of the girls, just the energy we had tonight,” Jung said. “As a coach, you hate to lose, The kids hate to lose, but I don’t think there’s anything more than what they gave.”
The two teams played to a 21-21 tie at halftime as Dickinson held Century to just 24 points in the first 24 minutes of the game.
The Midgets (3-7, 3-5 West Region) even had a seven-point lead with 14 minutes remaining in the game. However, from there Century started turning turnovers into points, amassing 26 points the rest of the way.
“They were making it a lot tougher for us to score,” Jung said. “They really tightened up when they had to.”
Nonetheless, the Midget defense was much stingier this time around. On Jan. 6, Century (10-1, 8-0 West) crushed Dickinson 79-46.
“We tried switching a lot of stuff up,” Jung said. “I really credit our kids’ effort to hold them to that low of a total.”
Dickinson sophomore Jess Herauf missed her first three shots of the game, but nailed her final seven to finish with a team-high 14 points.
