MANDAN — Late-period goals pushed Mandan past Dickinson on Thursday night in a West Region boys hockey game.
Casey Mischel scored with 20 seconds left in the third period to give Mandan a 2-1 victory and hand the Midgets their ninth consecutive loss.
Dickinson led 1-0 for just 40 seconds in the second period after Cole Frenzel scored a goal with 1:05 left in the period.
“We had our chances. We’ve just got to capitalize on them,” Dickinson coach Tom Folske said. “We can’t give up as many chances.”
But, instead of going into the third without the momentum and trailing by a goal, the Braves came up with a game-changer.
Trevor Huck, who assisted on Mischel’s game-winner in the third, got assists from Mischel and Mitch Helbling and punched in a tying goal during a 5-on-3 power play with 25 seconds left in the period.
Dickinson goaltender Joel Otto had 35 saves while Alex Lewis stopped 28 shots for the Braves (5-7, 3-6 West Region).
“We had another solid effort from Joel Otto,” Folske said. “You can’t ask anymore. He deserves a better outcome.”
The Midgets dropped to 4-10 overall and 2-10 in the West Region.
