Utah lawmakers call for football playoff system

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s state legislature is calling for a playoff system to determine college football’s national champion.

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s state legislature is calling for a playoff system to determine college football’s national champion.

With University of Utah football players on hand, the state senate adopted a resolution Monday it wants sent to President Barack Obama urging the NCAA to abandon the Bowl Championship Series in favor of a playoff system.

Utah’s political leaders — including those who went to archrival Brigham Young University — are upset an undefeated Utah team was shut out of the BCS national championship game.

Utah finished its perfect season with a No. 2 ranking in the final Associated Press poll.

State lawmakers say the BCS is too close to a monopoly and prevents schools like Utah from having a chance to play for the national title.
