SAN DIEGO (AP) — The decomposing carcass of a 35-foot-long blue whale has been hauled to shore in San Diego.

The carcass was spotted two miles off La Jolla Saturday morning. Officials concerned the rotting carcass would end up in a cove and stink the shoreline decided to secure it with a net and tow it to Fiesta Island.

Lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma said the trip took about six hours.

Specialists from Sea World and the National Marines Fisheries Service planned to conduct a necropsy to determine the cause of death. Authorities say the carcass will then be taken to a landfill.
