Fargo mall exec backs clothing sales tax exemption

BISMARCK (AP) — The chief executive of Fargo’s West Acres shopping mall supports a proposal to exempt clothing from North Dakota’s 5 percent sales tax.

BISMARCK (AP) — The chief executive of Fargo’s West Acres shopping mall supports a proposal to exempt clothing from North Dakota’s 5 percent sales tax.

Brad Schlossman says Minnesota already exempts clothing from its sales tax. He says the change will help bolster North Dakota shopping on the west side of the Red River.

The bill is getting a look in the North Dakota Senate’s Finance and Taxation Committee.

City officials oppose the change, because it would mean local sales taxes also would not apply to clothing.

Spokesmen for the cities of Fargo, Grand Forks and Dickinson say that would take away sales tax money from local projects. They say the loss would put more pressure on local property taxes.
