Grand Forks landfill opponents in court

GRAND FORKS (AP) — Opponents of a proposed Grand Forks landfill are challenging a zoning law in federal court.

GRAND FORKS (AP) — Opponents of a proposed Grand Forks landfill are challenging a zoning law in federal court.

Darryl Bragg chairs the Grand Forks County Citizens Coalition. His group believes the extraterritorial zoning law used by the city to put the landfill in Rye Township is unconstitutional. The coalition says township residents are affected by the city’s zoning decisions but don’t get to vote for city leaders.

Bragg said he hopes to put the landfill on hold until the case is decided.

The city wants the lawsuit thrown out. Public Works Director Todd Feland says extraterritorial zoning is a common around the country.
