Fire marshals want slow-burning cigarettes in ND

BISMARCK (AP) — Fire officials say North Dakota should join the ranks of states that require slower-burning cigarettes.

BISMARCK (AP) — Fire officials say North Dakota should join the ranks of states that require slower-burning cigarettes.

The North Dakota Senate’s Finance and Taxation Committee is reviewing the bill. It says all cigarettes sold in North Dakota must be made so they don’t keep burning when they’re left alone.

The bill would take effect in August 2010.

David Nuss is a regional manager for the National Fire Protection Association. He says most states have approved similar bills. The slower-burning cigarettes are already sold in Montana and Minnesota.

Nuss says the new cigarette cuts down on the number of accidental fires because it doesn’t stay lit unless someone is puffing it.
