About 60 fifth and sixth graders from area schools attended Dickinson State University’s annual Nurse Camp Saturday, where they were able to experience some of what nursing students learn, from stapling a wound to learning CPR and administering medicine to geriatric patients.

Various stations set up throughout the Nursing Department gave students front-row seats to different aspects of nursing. At one station, camp participants donned full surgical-wear, including booties, a sterile gown, mask and cap and then played the classic game “Operation” to show how much attire is required when performing surgery.

“Invitations were sent to all the area schools for any fifth and sixth grade students that would like to attend, said Janis Neumann, an instructor in the Nursing Department. “The camp has been put on since 2004 and we’ve had a great turnout,” she said. “The kids really like it.”
