DHS, Trinity compete at Relays

BISMARCK — The Dickinson High girls track and field team used a steady effort in its relays to come away with a third-place finish Saturday at the North Dakota Relays.

BISMARCK — The Dickinson High girls track and field team used a steady effort in its relays to come away with a third-place finish Saturday at the North Dakota Relays.

The Midgets won the 800-meter relay and took second in the 400, 1,600 and 3,200 relays to finish with 98 team points, 5½ less than runner-up Bismarck Century. Bismarck High ran away with the title, amassing 177 points.

“We had a lot of nice performances, especially on the track,” Dickinson High co-coach Jay Schobinger said.

Dickinson High sophomore Jess Herauf threw the discus for the first time and placed fourth in the event with a throw of 111 feet, 3 inches. Herauf’s javelin throw 119-07 was good enough to win the event. The Midgets also did a variety of damage in the sprints as Amily Lantz took second in the 100 and Lantz, Brie Lynch and Nicole Messer all placed in the 200. Dickinson High senior Dakota Wolf took second in both the 800 and 1,600.

The Dickinson High boys placed fourth, led by Bryce Levorsen’s winning pole vault of 13 feet. Beau Miller took fourth in the event. Austin Hibl took third in the discus and fifth in the shotput while sprinter Challis Williams took third in the 400 and fourth in the 200.

Bismarck High won the meet with 162 points while Grand Forks Red River (115½) and Bismarck Century (111½) were second and third, respectively.

“We’re pleased with what the boys are doing,” Schobinger said.

Dickinson Trinity also competed at the meet. The girls (51) came away with sixth place thanks to strong efforts from seniors Breanna Messer and Marie Franzen. Franzen placed third in the triple jump and had a state-qualifying leap of 16-5 in the long jump. Messer took second in the 100 hurdles and sixth in the high jump.

“We’ve gotten a little better every track meet,” Trinity coach Craig Kovash said. “Both boys and girls competed hard.”

The Titan boys took ninth with 22 points, paced by Kohl Koppinger’s fifth-place finish in the pole vault. Jaden Kuhn finished sixth in the 200 and the Titans placed sixth in the 800 and 3,200 relays.
