After nearly a year of fundraising, the Dunn County Veterans Memorial Committee has received over $100,000 in donations, prompting them to order the memorial stone and begin finalizing plans for construction.
The granite memorial stone, named “India Black”, will come from India in about four months, and then will be engraved by Allied Monument Company of Dickinson, said Ron Borth, committee member.
“It’s the same granite used in the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Washington, D.C.,” Borth said.
The stone costs $80,000, and the committee has already put down an initial payment of $50,000. The entire wall will measure about 40 feet wide and 7 feet tall, Borth added.
Engraving of the more than 600 names will cost about $100 a name, Borth estimates. The stone will hold between 800 to 1,000 names.
“The names just keep coming,” Borth said. “I imagine that people are realizing that this is going forward and everyone wants to be a part of it.”
A tentative cutoff date has been set for June 1 for taking names for the wall. Borth said he isn’t sure if construction on the memorial will begin this year.
“We were going to start this year, but the way it looks now, four months is going to start putting us into the fall seasons and we don’t want to construct over fall and winter,” Borth said. “I can’t speak for the committee but my best guess is that they are not going to get it up this year, but construction will begin next spring.”
Some local residents have more than one submission.
“I submitted my dad’s name, uncle’s name, four of my brothers’ names’, my husband and two of my sons,” said Margaret Bandle, a Killdeer resident. “I think it’s a very positive thing.”
