FARGO — Forum Communications Co., which owns The Dickinson Press and The Forum, has eliminated the job of its North Dakota Capitol correspondent.
Janell Cole, who worked as Capitol correspondent for The Forum for eight years and then for its parent company the past two years, wrote about state politics for The Forum, Grand Forks Herald, Jamestown Sun and The Dickinson Press.
She was the last remaining full-time North Dakota statehouse reporter working for specific newspapers outside of Bismarck. The Associated Press still has a full-time Capitol correspondent.
“Working for Forum Communications was the greatest opportunity of my career,” Cole said Saturday. “I’m grateful for having had 10 years in the best job in North Dakota journalism.”
Forum Editor Matthew Von Pinnon, said the move was part of the company’s cost-cutting measures. He said it was hard for the company to justify having a full-time Capitol correspondent when the Legislature is only in session four months every other year.
Von Pinnon said the company is still committed to covering North Dakota politics and will completely cover the every-other-year sessions.
