St. Joseph’s Hospital and Health Care Center’s Babykind in Dickinson has been busier than usual with 44 babies born in May.

“I’ve gone back 10 years and this is the most babies we’ve had in one month,” said Deb Bolin, acute care director.

In breaking down the number, 25 of the babies were born in one week and 10 were born in one weekend.

Bolin said Babykind expects between 25 and 30 deliveries per month.

“That’s what we staff for,” she said.

As the deliveries started increasing, extra staff was called to work.

“I’d like to really commend the OB staff who came in on their weekends off,” Bolin said.

Babykind has three labor/delivery/recovery rooms; and at times, all three were busy, she said.

“We were busy, but everything went well for everybody,” she said.

Bolin has no clue why Babykind was hit so hard during May. June is busy as well, with seven births recorded by Thursday.

Lucia Mason’s daughter, Sasha, was born Wednesday — the third birth of the month.

She and her husband, Chris Mason, also have a daughter, Diana, who was born July 23, 2006.

Lucia is happy with the care she received at Babykind.

“The nurses are real nice. My doctor is really good, too,” she said.
