A sudden onset of heavy rain Friday caused flooding in the Villard Street area.

The underpass at the intersection of Villard Street and Third Avenue West, which has been known to flood, was closed due to extensive flooding Friday afternoon.

A Sax Motor Company mechanic said floodwater crept up to vehicle tires in the car lot across the street from the shop. He also said a vehicle stalled in the Sax Motor shop driveway from too much water creeping into the engine. Several vehicles were parked in area business parking lots as the water height made driving dangerous.

Rich LeBlang, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Bismarck, said the only rainfall numbers available by press time were a measurement of 1.22 inches.
