HAZEN — The Dickinson Volunteers’ section slide continued on Thursday.
The Vols dropped their fifth straight section contest, losing 7-5 to Hazen. The second game was not finished when The Press was published.
“We’re searching for answers right now,” Dickinson coach Carter Fong said. “We just haven’t put a complete game together in every phase in a long time.”
The Astros struck first, scoring two runs in the first inning and adding another in the second.
Then, in the top of the fourth, Dickinson hitter Taylor Thiel drilled a bases-clearing double to tie the game. Thiel finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs batted in.
The Vols took the lead with a run in the fifth, but were bit hard by the error bug in the fifth and gave up four runs, though they got one back in the top of the seventh.
Hazen starting pitcher Tanner Borlaug picked up the win, going the distance and allowing seven hits. Darren Haga went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Astros, who improved to 11-12 in Section 8.
“Hazen came up with clutch hits in key situations,” Fong said. “We only had two errors, but the errors we had were crucial.”
Dickinson starter Kevin Theurer went the distance and suffered the loss. The Vols drop to 16-9 in the section.
