Killdeer duo continues team’s all-star game trandition

It seems like every year, the Killdeer football team sends a couple of players to the Shrine Bowl.

Josh Karey and Tanner Olson are this year’s participants.

The duo made the West roster for the 11-man game, which starts at 3 p.m. today at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks.

“These guys are good players,” said former Killdeer coach Chuck Wagner, who stepped down after last season and has been replaced by Lou Dobitz. “It’s really an honor for them.”

Karey was a second-team, all-state selection at linebacker, though he played mostly at defensive end for the Cowboys.

“He’s a good solid player who busts his butt,” Wagner said.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pound fullback was a three-year starter.

“He gets through the hole pretty quick,” Wagner said. “He ran in our 4-by-1 and 4-by-2 relays and he ran the open 100. He’s got good speed and he’s a big guy.”

Karey’s rise to success was much more gradual than Olson, who used a strong offseason after his junior season to make himself known.

Olson, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound lineman, was a first-team, all-state pick on the defensive line.

“Tanner didn’t play as long (as Karey),” Wagner said. “Tanner was probably our best surprise this past season, I thought. … He worked hard in the offseason and improved his running and mobility. He really worked hard to make himself a better player.”

Even more impressive is the fact that Olson led the team in defensive points.

“We haven’t had a person lead us in defensive points from a defensive tackle position in a long time,” Wagner said. “These two guys should show themselves well.”

Other area players competing offensively for the 11-man West team are Dickinson High lineman Sam Herauf, Dickinson Trinity RB/LB Kaden Ficek, Beach quarterback Jake Tescher, Hazen lineman Luke Knott, Hazen linebacker Chad Marshall, New Salem-Glen Ullin lineman Nate Doll, Beulah wide receiver Josh Schank and Grant County-Flasher QB/DB Austin Henderson.

Mark Gibson of Bismarck High, which beat Fargo South in the Class AAA state championship, is the head coach while New Salem’s Steve Kleinjan, Grant County-Flasher’s Jamie Krenz and Hazen’s Rick Philion will assist him.

The East will be coached by Fargo South’s Kevin Feeney. He will be assisted by Jay Schneider of Devils Lake, Larimore’s Paul Peterson and Eric Olson of North Sargent-Milnor.

Raiders represented well in 9-man game

Richardton-Taylor-Hebron coach Travis Olson can look at the roster for the 9-man West team as an indication of the season he had last fall.

The Raiders finished 9-2 and lost to St. John in the quarterfinals of the state playoffs.

“It was a tremendous amount of fun,” Olson said. “The kids worked hard throughout their careers to have the season that they had.”

Dylan Messer (FB/LB), Kasey Naumann (OL/DL), Lane Transtrom (QB) and Scott Remington (RB/DB) all made the team and could play key roles in today’s game.

Olson, who is assisting Williams County coach Tim Schaeffer, said Transtrom will rotate snaps with Heart River quarterback Jimmy Smith.

“I think that’s a great thing,” Olson said. “We don’t have to (give the plays) second-hand. We can tell the quarterback right there. … Of course, if one gets in a groove, we’ll go with him longer.”

Olson said Messer will most likely play both ways and start at linebacker while Remington will start at free safety and play a few snaps at running back and wide receiver. Naumann will play on defense and contribute on offense when needed.

“Four is a lot of kids to have,” Olson said. “We feel real fortunate about that.”

Also playing in the game from the area is Mott-Regent lineman Matt Dobitz and Hettinger’s Zach Morast.

“(We’re) surrounded with a bunch of good athletes that know the game real well,” Olson said. “It makes our job easy.”
