Letter: Twin Towers cartoon sends racist message
I grew up in Linton, where my father was a Republican state senator, but have lived in Washington, D.C. for 30 years.
Last week my friend and I were on a road trip through North Dakota, and we enjoyed a stop in Dickinson, marveling over the Stix n’ Twigs Cafe’ and other downtown improvements.
We continued to Medora, and I picked up the Saturday, Sept. 12 issue of your newspaper. As I was enjoying the articles and thinking that it was an equally good paper to the Fargo Forum, I abruptly came to Page A6 and the cartoon on the Twin Towers to be rebuilt as an amusement park in Tehran.
What it said to me is that your paper believes that all Moslems — Arab and non-Arab — are terrorists, since the Iranians had nothing to do with 9/11, but that somehow they were linked to it, simply for being Moslem.
I wondered what message that conveyed to the Indonesian wait staff at the Rough Riders Hotel, a wonderful group of people, who are probably Moslem, and what it said to any other Moslems in the region. Racism, I guess. Sad.
