Medora: Don't forget to turn off the lights

There’s a season for everything, including Christmas lights in Medora.

To keeps its historic feel, Medora has a “Christmas Light Season,” which limits residents to displaying lights on their homes from Nov. 15 to Jan. 15.

At a recent Medora zoning meeting, City Council member Todd Corneil requested the season be extended so lights could shine on special occasions during the summer.

The community is exploring the possibility and Kinley Slauter, Planning and Zoning Commission president, said the City Council would have to vote on the suggestion.

Matt Kolling, who acts as the attorney for Dickinson and Medora said “It’s just something Medora has done specially due to the historic nature of the town.”

Medora has additional restrictions on what types of lights people can put outside their stores and businesses to preserve the historic integrity, he added.

Dickinson does not have zoning codes dealing with Christmas lights. Gwen Lantz, Gladstone auditor said there is no ordinance regarding Christmas lights there and Judy Pond, Bowman auditor said the city doesn’t either.

“Next month I’ll be finishing out my 20th year here and it’s not an issue,” Pond said.
