Snow flies, start up the snowmobiles

North Dakota offers almost 3,400 miles of snowmobile trails.

North Dakota offers almost 3,400 miles of snowmobile trails.

This is possible because about 2,000 landowners provide easements on their property for the trail system.

The state snowmobile trails are located on both public and private land. In order for trails to be allowed on private lands, easements are secured by the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department from landowners, according to a press release.

Snowmobilers need permission to operate on private property, whether it is posted or not.

Contact the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department at 701-328-5357 to acquire the 2009-2011 snowmobile regulations booklet. Booklets and additional information on regulations are also available online at http://www.parkrec.nd.gov/recreation/snowmobile.
