Large grain bin collapses in Minot

MINOT (AP) — A 720,000-bushel grain bin collapsed at a Minot elevator overnight, spilling tons of wheat and knocking several nearby rail cars off the tracks. No one was hurt.

The collapse at SunPrairie Grain was discovered about 4 a.m. Thursday by electrical workers who were investigating a power outage.

SunPrairie Manager Brad Haugeberg (HOW’-guh-burg) says the bin was completed during the 2009 harvest and was filled to capacity with spring wheat last September. He says the manufacturer of the bin and the contractor who put it up will look into what happened.

A bin that is still standing also will be inspected to ensure it is structurally sound. That bin is filled with sunflowers.
