Chad Deveaux, who has lived in Dickinson for about four months, was arrested Tuesday for allegedly possessing child pornography, according to the Dickinson Police Department.
Amanda McNamee, DPD investigator, said police received a tip about the 33-year-old man who was living at the Queen City Motel.
“I got a search warrant and he was arrested because we found child pornography on the computer,” she said.
Deveaux was living with three children who were not present when police executed their search, McNamee said. It doesn’t appear they were abused, she added.
Deveaux is not believed to have been producing the images allegedly found on his computer.
“It was stuff that he was downloading,” McNamee said.
A dozen or more pornographic photos of children were allegedly on his computer, she added.
“We’re not completely sure at this time because we have to do a forensic exam with the computer yet and (the Bureau of Criminal Investigation) will handle that,” McNamee said.
Jim Hope, Stark County assistant state’s attorney, charged Deveaux with possession of objectionable materials, a felony, on Wednesday morning.
Federal authorities may take the case on, Hope said.
“We normally do not deal with these,” Hope said. “Normally this type of case is a federal matter.”
More charges may be filed against Deveaux as the investigation continues, Hope added.
Deveaux is not a registered sex offender and was working at a local wrecking company, McNamee said.
“He is from Canada and he’s working here on a green card right now,” McNamee said.
He is being held at the Southwest Multi County Correction Center in Dickinson.
