Letter: Police didn't have to shoot dog

Last Sunday evening, a black lab was shot several times by a Dickinson police officer.

I understand it was for self defense, but is it really necessary to shoot an innocent animal?

There are other ways that you can defend yourself if you are being attacked by a dog.

First of all, if the dog is approaching you, don’t run. It will only make the dog more agitated. Second, get up to higher ground. You should separate yourself from the animal. If you cannot find higher ground, try throwing an object at the animal to distract it.

If you think the dog is ready to bite, take off your jacket and wrap it around your arm and hold it in front of you. Instead of shooting the animal, try one of those ideas. You might actually save yourself in the situation.

So, next time, if you are in a situation where are dog is going to attack, try one of those methods of defense.

Just let the dog be and it won’t hurt you either.
