Dickinson’s Dale Burwick stepped down as Roughrider Racing Association president on Wednesday night, making way for a driver in just his second season to take over as the new head of the organization that runs the Southwest Speedway race track south of Dickinson.
Mark Selle, a Pure Stocks driver from Dickinson, has moved from RRA vice president to president less than a month into the Southwest Speedway season. The track just held its second night of racing for the year May 29.
“He (Burwick) was having a hard time keeping his car where it needed to be,” Selle said. “He was putting a lot of time into the track and not enough into his car.”
Burwick, who is tied for the lead in the IMCA Modified point standings, said he had no comment on the situation but confirmed he had stepped down as the board’s president after more than two years in the role.
“Dale said he’s going to be helping me out quite a bit and helping me get on my feet and hopefully keep this season running smooth,” Selle said.
The next night of racing is Saturday, June 12.
Selle said the biggest issue, as always, will be to continue getting volunteers to help in all aspects of the racing. Volunteers help officiate races, run the computer scoring and raceceiver systems as well as the concession stands.
“It’s always an effort to find people to run the track,” said Selle, who added he is trying to track down more volunteers.
Track promoter Bob Klein said one of the major issues he witness Burwick encounter was the stress of being both a driver and the board president on race nights.
Klein said explicit announcements are made to drivers during pit meetings that any issues should not be brought to RRA board members during the races.
“These guys are supposed to be racers and not board members out there,” Klein said.
Board, drivers taking a look at Modified issues
In two weeks of racing, the Modified class has run a combined 25 laps in their two scheduled 25-lap feature races.
Race length has been a factor in both races as issues with accidents that caused prolonged cautions are beginning to grate on drivers, fans and track officials. Klein added that some Modifieds drivers have voiced their concerns about what happened in the feature races.
“The guys just can’t get a race in,” Klein said. “We’re trying to give the fans some racing.”
Klein said the 30-minute race length limit for the Modifieds feature will be strictly enforced at the next races.
“We’ve got to try something,” Klein said. “The fans are really getting upset about all this and they want to see some racing and trying to get something to work out there. We’re going to have to get a little tougher on the black flags out there.”
