Mandan rallies to beat Roughriders

MANDAN — Mandan Chiefs pitcher Jordy Wenstrom, who was the winner in Mandan High School’s Class A state baseball championship victory on Saturday, returned the mound Monday for the first time in the American Legion season and silenced the Dickinson Roughriders in his 2 1/3-inning relief appearance.

Wenstrom picked up the win after Mandan rallied in the eighth inning, scoring three runs to beat the Roughriders 8-7 at Veteran’s Memorial Ballpark. It was Dickinson’s season opener.

Caleb Burgard, the Roughriders’ lone returner from last season, capped a four-run third inning with a two-run homer. Dickinson was up 7-5 when Mandan came back.

“For the first time playing Legion A baseball for everybody except Burgard, I thought we did pretty well,” Dickinson coach Andy Emard said.

Taylor Dutchak had a double and two RBI for the Roughriders.

Reid Jungling and Steven Serr each homered for the Chiefs (1-2).

Sean Kelly started for Dickinson and pitched into the sixth inning. Aaron Berg took the loss, giving up the three runs in the eighth.
