Sens. Byron Dorgan and Kent Conrad cast courageous votes June 10 against the Murkowski resolution to bar Environmental Protection Agency action to limit global warming emissions.
Curbing these emissions is vital to the public interest and will help ensure a livable planet for all Americans and the entire human race.
We at Dakota Resource Council would like to see Congress pass comprehensive legislation to reduce these emissions. We favor the “cap and dividend” approach embodied the Cantwell-Collins Carbon Limits and Energy for America’s Renewal Act.
Nevertheless, Congressional action on global warming policy is currently stalled. It is worth noting that Sen. Murkowski (R-Ak.) has done nothing to advance Congressional action.
Until Congress acts, Americans should expect EPA to act in the public interest to reduce the threat of global warming. It is their job to address any emissions that threaten public health and the environment.
Our senators voted in the public interest and against the narrow special interests of polluters who are actively working to stifle any controls on carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions.
They deserve our thanks for voting to protect the American people despite heavy pressure from these special interests.
