FARGO (AP) — North Dakota’s Transportation Department says it is cooperating with a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service investigation into the killing of endangered flowers near Lisbon by herbicides.

U.S. Forest Service District Ranger Brian Stotts says about 200 Western prairie fringed orchids were destroyed. About 7,000 of the flowers grow in the Sheyenne National Grasslands.

State Transportation spokeswoman Peggy Anderson says her agency hired the Ransom County Weed Board to control weeds in the grasslands.

Anderson says the DOT takes environmental issues seriously.
