Roughriders’ season ends at regional

MANDAN — The Dickinson Roughriders American Legion baseball team’s season ended Thursday at Veteran’s Memorial Ballpark.

After two losses at the state Class A West Region tournament, the Roughriders were eliminated.

Dickinson lost 9-8 in 10 innings to the Williston Keybirds in the tournament’s opening game.

The Roughriders (14-26) held an 8-3 lead after the top of the fifth before Williston rallied.

The Keybirds scored two runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings, and tied the game at 8 in the seventh.

Jon Westphal went 4-for-6 for the Keybirds, with a home run and 3 RBI.

The Mandan Chiefs eliminated Dickinson from the postseason with a 9-6 win in the late game of the day.

Mandan scored five runs in the top of the first and had a 7-1 lead after its turn in the second before the Roughriders slowly chipped away at the lead.

The Chiefs’ Reid Jungling hit a two-run homer in the second.

Dickinson’s Caleb Burgard hit an RBI double in the sixth to score Brett Braunagel. Mandan got the run back in the top of the seventh.

The Roughriders made Mandan sweat a bit in the ninth as two more runs came home, both with two outs, as reliever Jordy Winstrom had trouble getting the final out of the game.
