Long balls help give Dickinson Mustangs 11-year-olds a win

LYONS, Kan. — Jerzy Martin and Tanner Ouellette each hit three-run home runs as the Dickinson 11-year-old baseball team opened up its Cal Ripken Midwest Plains Regional Tournament with a victory Friday afternoon.

On a day where temperatures hovered close to 100 degrees, Dickinson beat Southeast Denver 14-3 behind the two homers and a seven-strikeout performance by pitcher Shawn Steffan, who faced 12 batters in three innings.

Dickinson scored six runs in the fourth inning.

Cameron Jorda went 4-for-5 while Martin, Mike Herauf, Treven Hopfauf and Jack Hanstad each had two hits. Herauf and Jorda had doubles.

Dickinson plays Liberal, Kan., at 5:45 p.m. today in the second game of its pool play. A win would put Dickinson into the tournament semifinals.
