A Gladstone man was injured Thursday evening when two train engines struck the road grader he had backed onto the tracks south of Ray, according to a North Dakota Highway Patrol news release issued Friday morning.

Monte Martin, 58, backed onto the tracks at about 7:15 p.m. Thursday when a BNSF train engine heading east struck the rear of Martin’s vehicle, according to the Highway Patrol.

Martin’s grader spun and was hit by a second engine and the train soon came to a stop.

“It was an empty grain train,” said Amy McBeth, BNSF spokeswomen.

The train had 113 cars and none of the BNSF crew was injured, she added.

Martin was injured and taken to Tioga Medical Center. He was no longer there Friday morning, center staff said. No phone number for Marwas listed.

The grader had $10,000 in damage, according to the release. The train had $25,000 in damage.

“It’s under investigation at this point,” McBeth said.
