Great Northern Properties (an out of state company that holds former railroad rights and coal rights leased from mineral owners) has talked about starting a mine, a coal-fired power plant, an experimental power plant and/or a merchant mine, said Mark Trechock, staff director for the Dakota Resource Council.
“My concerns about the project, whatever that might be, is the amount of pollution it might create, the impact the project will have on the environment, and the poor record some companies have about turning the land back over to the landowner after they have completed their work,” said Chris Kanski, South Heart resident.
A coal mine near South Heart would put a number of local farmers and ranchers out of business because of the large tracts of land that would be unusable for agriculture over a long period of time, said Linda Weiss, chairwoman of the Badlands Area Resource Council.
Representatives from Great Northern Properties were not present Tuesday night.
