Herauf named ND's Gatorade Player of the Year for volleyball

Dickinson High senior Jess Herauf has been named North Dakota’s 2010 Gatorade Player of the Year for volleyball.

Dickinson High senior Jess Herauf has been named North Dakota’s 2010 Gatorade Player of the Year for volleyball.

Herauf, a 5-foot-9 senior outside hitter had 488 kills, 616 digs, 35 aces and 27 blocks this season as she led the Midgets to a 29-11 record and sixth place in the Class A state tournament.

Herauf, Dickinson’s all-time leader in kills, was also named Class A’s Senior Athlete of the Year this fall and was a three-time all-state selection.

Outside of the court, Herauf has maintained a 3.25 grade-point average in the classroom, is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and her school’s student council. She has also volunteered as a youth volleyball and basketball instructor, as part of Dickinson High’s peer mediation and peer-mentoring programs, and on behalf of her church community.

She is the third Dickinson High player to win the award. Katelynn Stiefel won the award in 2003 and Paige Nash in 2006.

Herauf is still undecided on her collegiate destination. She is fielding NCAA Division I scholarship offers for track and field.
