Update: Richardton blaze started at former hardware store

Firefighters and ambulance crews have been on-scene since this morning in downtown Richardton where the vacant Hardware Hank caught fire and spread to the vacant Elkhorn Bar.

Firefighters and ambulance crews have been on-scene since this morning in downtown Richardton where the vacant Hardware Hank caught fire and spread to the vacant Elkhorn Bar.

At 4:40 p.m., firefighters were entering a neighboring vacant bank to make sure fire had not spread there.

Earlier reports indicated the fire started at the Elkhorn Bar and moved to the bank. However, a Richardton fireman updated Press reporters at about 4:40 p.m. He said the fire started at 11:30 a.m. and went on to engulf about half a city block.

It is unclear what started the fire but the Stark County Sheriff’s Department called the state fire marshall, who will not begin investigating until the fires are extinguished, the firefighter said.

A Taylor firefighter said he didn't believe anyone has been injured but could not confirm that.

Among the emergency crews on scene are Hebron, Richardton and Taylor firefighters.

Two streets were blocked off surrounding the building and smoke can be seen from the Interstate.

Firefighters were still trying to put the fire out as of 5 p.m.
