HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana wildlife officials are seeking approval to scope out sites suitable to relocate dozens of bison from the genetically pure Yellowstone National Park herd.
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials say they also will ask the FWP commission's blessing to create a state bison management plan when the commission meets Jan. 13.
Officials say the goal is to find areas that could support a huntable population of at least 50 bison involved in a government quarantine program testing for the disease brucellosis.
FWP plans to study temporary relocation sites, such as the Spotted Dog, Marias River and Beartooth wildlife management areas.
After the five-year quarantine is up, wildlife officials would seek the animals’ permanent relocation.
