JAMESTOWN — Minot and Dickinson keep raising the bar in gymnastics in North Dakota.
The state’s two premier teams went head-to-head again Friday and it was the Majettes who captured their third consecutive state championship with a season-best score of 149.150.
“We’ve been going back and forth with Dickinson all year,” Minot coach Pam Tweten said. “They have a very good team, but our girls were able to come through.”
The key to the win?
“We stayed on beam,” Tweten said. “Whoever stays on beam usually wins.”
Minot had three of the top four all-around finishers in Misha Taylor (37.950), who finished first overall, and Samantha Huether (37.300) and Brooklyn Bender, whose 37.133 was good for fourth.
Seventh-grader Acacia Fossum’s runner-up finish of 37.566 led the Midgets’ impressive 147.417. Their score was down slightly from last week’s West Region meet, but was nothing to hang their heads over.
“We can’t be down. We weren’t perfect, but we still performed pretty well,” Dickinson coach Kent Van Ells said. “We just got beat by a better team today.”
Van Ells added with a laugh: “That’s our highest team total since 1986. Little good it did us, huh?”
Jessica Gabriel of Bismarck Century, broke up a Minot and Dickinson sweep of the individual events, taking the bars with a 9.550.
Huether had the top score of the meet with sparkling 9.800 on vault.
The beam and floor each had two scores of 9.700 or better.
Dickinson freshman Mikaela Kessel nipped Taylor on the floor, 9.783 to 9.733.
Taylor was right in the hunt on beam too. Her 9.700 was second to Fossum’s 9.783.
“We did a lot of good things,” Van Ells said. “We’re a young team and hopefully we can have another good day (Saturday).”
The individual state meet begins at 2 p.m. CST today.
