Blue Hawks split with Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif. — The Dickinson State softball team picked up a split with Biola University (Calif.) on Wednesday.

DSU managed just four hits in a 5-1 loss in Game 1, but capitalized on Biola’s four errors to claim a 4-2 victory in Game 2.

Nikki Youngblood scored from second base after Ikea Mauldin reached on a throwing error in the fourth inning to tie the second game at 1.

Then in the fifth, Sara Jane Webster doubled to left field to drive in the go-ahead run and Brittney Rivas and Vanessa Adame scored on passed balls to put the 11th-ranked Blue Hawks ahead 4-1.

Biola pitcher Shaylynn Weststeryn scored an unearned run in the sixth after reaching on an error and advancing to second on a passed ball, which cut the lead.

But, sophomore pitcher Taysia Kaufman kept Biola off balance in the bottom of the seventh to close out the victory.

In Game 1, Lyndsie Roberts and Lauren Gandy both drove in runs to get Biola off to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Gandy drove in another run in the second inning.

Youngblood scored DSU’s only run in the fourth when Jessica Huseby reached on an error at second base.

Huseby tried to score on the play, but was called out at home.

CeCe Luster was 1-for-4 with an RBI in the sixth and pitched a four-hitter for Biola.

Luster struck out six with one walk.

Webster (2-4) took another tough loss for the Blue Hawks. The NAIA All-America senior pitcher gave up 12 hits while striking out five and walking one.
