Earl Pomeroy said Friday that he’s focusing on his new law career in Washington and is not now thinking about political office.

Mark Schneider, the chairman of the North Dakota Democratic-NPL Party, said earlier this week that Pomeroy, who served 18 years in the U.S. House, had agreed to consider the possibility of running for governor.

“I’m thoroughly enjoying my professional pursuits,” Pomeroy said. “I’m devoting my thoughts and energies to success at the law firm. That’s where my focus is.”

After losing his House seat to Republican Rick Berg, Pomeroy joined a law office in Washington for a firm that specializes in health policy. Pomeroy said much of his work involves health policy, but he also will be involved in other areas of expertise, including pensions and agriculture.

“I am not excluding anything nor am I focusing on politics right now,” Pomeroy said. “North Dakota’s first in my thoughts and loyalties but I’m focusing on getting my new career established.”
