FARGO (AP) — Milk production in North Dakota during January, February and March totaled 88 million pounds, down 6 percent from the first quarter in 2010.

The federal Agriculture Department says the average number of milk cows in North Dakota during the first three months of the year stood at 20,000, equal to the previous quarter but down 1,000 over the year.
Milk produced per cow was 4,400 pounds, down from 4,650 pounds the previous quarter and 4,480 pounds the previous year.
Nationwide, milk production during the first quarter totaled 48.4 billion pounds, up 2.2 percent over the year.
