Dickinson State freshman John Paul Williams may have set himself up to qualify for the NAIA national championships in the decathlon after a second-place finish at the Dakota Athletic Conference Multi-Championships on Monday at the Badlands Activities Center.
Williams won four of the 10 events, but fell just short of Jamestown College senior Josh Ewalt, who won his second straight title. Ewalt had 6,225 points while Williams finished with 6,141.
Ewalt won the javelin (157 feet, 9 inches), discus (104-4) and shot put (35-3) while coming in second in five other events: 110-meter hurdles, 400-meter run, high jump, long jump and pole vault.
“He’s a guy who has a chance to be a national placer,” DSU coach Pete Stanton said. “It was good for those two to push each other and they helped each other out.”
Williams won the 100 meters (11.33 seconds), the 110 hurdles (15.54), the pole vault (14-5¼) and the long jump (21-8¾).
Williams’ point total should be enough to help him qualify for the national meet, Stanton said.
“We’re just hoping for the best,” Stanton said. “Obviously his effort the past couple days put him in pretty good shape. He had an outstanding day, stayed very focused and did the things he needed to do to put himself in a position to be at nationals.”
Jamestown College’s Sarah Skipper won her third consecutive women’s heptathlon title.
She won the 200 meters (25.60), the 100 hurdles (14.96) and the long jump (17-5½). She was second in the 800 and the javelin.
DSU did not have a woman in the heptathlon.
After Saturday’s blizzard, Stanton said he was concerned the two-day meet wouldn’t be able to be held as scheduled.
But, it began on time Sunday afternoon as temperatures reached highs in the mid-40s and a cool wind whipped the BAC.
It finished during the pleasant warmth of Monday afternoon.
“Quite honestly, if you were to tell me Saturday afternoon we’d have anything going on like this the next couple days, I would have said no way,” Stanton said. “Somehow, someway, in our state two days later, it’s beautiful and J.P. just did a great job of stringing together two very nice days.”
DSU is scheduled to host the Blue Hawk Games at 1 p.m. Thursday.
