Another track and field meet, another huge performance by the Bismarck High boys.
The Demons got big performances out of its standouts and used its depth to pile on the points en route to a ninth consecutive West Region team championship Saturday at the Badlands Activities Center.
“We’re a pretty deep team. We have a few superstars, but we have a lot of depth,” Bismarck coach Dave Zittleman said.
The Demons had 269.5 points behind senior Channing Mann and sophomore Jake Leingang.
Mann took first in the 400 meters with a time of 49.78 seconds and was in the 1,600 relay that won with at time of 3:24.87. He also finished second in the 100 and 200 behind Bismarck St. Mary’s senior John Welk.
Leingang won the 1,600 meters in 4:20.46 seconds and the 3,200 in 9:48.56.
Bismarck won eight events in all.
Kendall Kuntz beat Devin Schirado by two inches in the high jump with his leap of 6-4. Schirado took the title in the triple jump (43-7).
Alex Neumiller bested Dickinson senior Nate Moody in the long jump with a leap of 22-7. Moody finished second at 22-2.
The Demons also won the 800 relay in 1:31.14.
“It’s a good team group,” Zittleman said. “The guys want to work hard for each other. That’s part of the reason we’re at where we’re at.”
Bismarck Century finished second in the team standings with 159 points and Dickinson was third at 94 points.
“That’s quite an accomplishment for our boys,” Dickinson co-coach Dave Michaelson said.
The Midgets had four runner-up finishes and used their depth to tack on more points.
Bismarck Century senior Conrad Schwarzkopf won the shot put (51-10) and discus (153-4), outgunning Dickinson’s talented thrower crew.
Dickinson senior Justin Dvorak was second in the shot put with a toss of 51-2 and third in the javelin at 151-0.
Senior Adam Grimsley finished second in the pole vault, which was held inside Wienbergen Gymnasium due to the day’s early weather.
Mandan’s Alex Koppy won the event in 14-1. Grimsley came in at 13-0.
Junior Vlad Kutka finished second behind Leingang in the 3,200 with a time of 10:02.71.
Along with his runner-up spot in the long jump, Moody finished third in the 300 hurdles — an event won by Century’s Drew Wiseman in 39.7 seconds — with a time of 40.62. He was eighth in the 200 meters (23.24 seconds), anchored the 1,600 relay team to sixth place (3:34.96).
“He’s just a good athlete,” Michaelson said. “He’s having a great senior year. He obviously is one of our finalists for athlete of the year. He’s really having a great track season. I give him a lot of credit. He comes out and competes hard every single meet.”
Welk had one of the biggest days of anyone at the meet.
He came within two-tenths of a second from breaking his own meet record in the 100 meters. His time of 10.74 was adjusted from a hand-held time, as was his 200 time of 21.94, because the race had to be run on the backstretch due to a high wind in the early afternoon.
Nevertheless, Welk was pleased with his performances and the eventual sunshine.
“It’s hard to stay focused and hard to keep the mind on what the goal is for the day,” Welk said. But coming out of the locker room and seeing the sun out finally was a good feeling.”
