Herauf wins 3 events, but Century comes away with West Region title

Jess Herauf ran from one side of 13th Avenue West to the other for more than an hour Saturday.

Competing in the long jump and the javelin at the same time got a little taxing on the Dickinson High senior.

There were some out-of-breath moments as she ran from the javelin throw area on the Dickinson State football practice field to the jump pits at the Badlands Activities Center. Still, the easygoing athlete smiled, laughed about the task at hand and, most importantly, got the job done.

Herauf won the javelin and the long jump and finished a close second in the 300-meter hurdles about 20 minutes after her opening events concluded. She wrapped up her day at the West Region track and field meet by winning the 100 hurdles.

“I know state is going to be hectic. It was good practice for state,” said Herauf, who was named the West Region’s senior athlete of the year. “I did fine. Everyone is so nice about it because they all know that I do random events. All the coaches were really nice and they held it up for me.”

Herauf won the javelin with her first throw, a distance of 134 feet, 1 inch. No one else equaled any of her throws in the vent.

She won the long jump in 17-7½ before running back to the javelin area for the final round.

The 300 hurdles turned out to be one of the most exciting races of the day. Herauf and Minot freshman Morgan Milbrath ran neck-and-neck all the way to the finish with Milbrath, running the race for just the second time, winning with a time of 44.98 seconds. Herauf finished in 45.01 seconds.

Milbrath picked up the most wins. Along with her win over Herauf in the 300 hurdles, the freshman won the 100 (12.24), 200 (24.94) and 400 (57.78).

“Wow. Hat’s off to Morgan,” Herauf said. “It’s going to be fun at state. It’s definitely going to be a tight race. I’m excited to run against her.”

Herauf later won the 100 hurdles in 15.64 seconds, edging Mandan’s Chelsea Peterson by one-tenth of a second.

Bismarck Century took home the team championship with 221 points, running away from runner-up Minot High, which had 135.

The Patriots won all four relay events and had four individual champions.

Brie Lynch, who moved to Bismarck from Dickinson last year, won the 800 meters with a time of 2:20.35. Hannah Larson won the high jump in 5-1. Hannah Jeske’s triple jump of 35-1½ edged Larson by 2¼ inches. Danielle Smith won the shot put in 39-1.

“I think it’s a credit to all of our girls. I think our depth really came through for us today,” Century coach Nick Walker said. “We had a few events that we won, but we had a lot of girls in that three through eight range today that stepped up and performed.”

Minot had its big moments, too.

Senior Brecca Wahlund set a new meet record in the 3,200 meters with a time of 10:45.98. She also won the 1,600 meters in 5:11.83.

Wahlund’s two-mile run bested the previous record of 10:52.21 set by Mandan’s Carly Emil in 2000.

“She’s a phenomenal runner. It was awesome just to be able to do that today. I’m just really thankful,” Wahlund said. “I just kept pushing it. I really didn’t know what I was going to run today. I just tried to give it my all and it felt good today.”

Williston had two winners.

Dani Clarke won the discus with a throw of 135-3. Hailey Horab won the pole vault with leap of 10 feet.

As the field events got going late in the morning, a slight rain continued to fall. But soon it let up, the clouds parted and by the end of the afternoon, the sun came out, the temperature warmed up and the meet opened up.

“It started off a little rough with the rain, but it turned into a beautiful day,” Herauf said. ‘It was a great day all around. Everyone had a good day and no one thought they’d have a good day because of the forecast.”

While Herauf had a successful day, one of her favorite moments came in watching senior teammate Ally Hoffmann run a state-qualifying time of 2:24.10 in the 800.

“She’s been trying to do that since the first race,” Herauf said. “When she qualified that, our whole team dogpiled her.”
