Extra caution on lake, river necessary

Boaters on Lake Sakakawea and the Missouri River are required to stay back 200 feet from the intake structure and the powerhouse (on the downstream side) because of strong currents and undertows due to abnormally high releases.

Boaters on Lake Sakakawea and the Missouri River are required to stay back 200 feet from the intake structure and the powerhouse (on the downstream side) because of strong currents and undertows due to abnormally high releases.

The restriction is also for the spillway structure, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Boaters are advised to exercise extreme caution and reduce speeds to help reduce bank erosion. High releases are creating stronger currents, moving debris and shifting sandbars.

Residents along the river are attempting to protect their homes and property and reducing wakes will aid in those efforts, according to the Army Corps.
