BISMARCK — The average athlete doesn’t get carted around at the Class A state track and field meet, but Dickinson High senior Jess Herauf isn’t an average athlete.
That’s why Herauf bolted off the awards stand Saturday at the Community Bowl and into a cart that delivered her to the javelin venue. Two events at one time isn’t out of the ordinary for Herauf.
“It’s kind of funny running from event to event and getting to jump on a golf cart,” said Herauf, who won two events and had second- and fourth-place finish Saturday in her last high school track meet.
“That was always fun. I thrive on being busy and doing more things at once because it gets me excited and I’m always warmed up for it.”
Herauf wasn’t just warmed up, she was smoking.
She scored 33 of the Midgets’ 46.5 points, winning the 100-meter hurdles and javelin, taking second in the 300 hurdles and placing fourth in long jump — an event she took up two weeks ago.
“All the events were fun, but I’m really excited about the (300 hurdles) because my goal was to break 45 (seconds),” Herauf said. She ran a personal best time of 44.21, taking second to Minot High sophomore Morgan Milbrath by .09 of a second.
She had a throw of 135 feet, 7 inches to win the javelin had a time of 16.37 seconds in the 100 hurdles. Her long jump was 17-3½.
Dickinson finished sixth in the team race. Bismarck Century won it with 102.5 points, followed by Minot at 89, Bismarck at 74, Grand Forks Red River at 69.5 and Fargo South at 63.
In the boys’ division, Dickinson finished fifth with 57 points, behind Bismarck with 194, Century with 93.5, West Fargo 90 and Grand Forks Red River 59.
Senior Nate Moody led the Midgets’ charge by placing in four events: second in the long jump (22-1½), fourth in the 300 hurdles (40.59), third in the 400 relay (44.11) and fifth in the 1,600 relay (3:32.01).
Junior Mason Frank also ran on the 1,600 and took seventh in the 100 (11.78). Junior Michael Porter ran a leg and was fifth in the 800 (2:01.58). Junior Dallas Zastoupil was also on the two winning relays.
Senior Justin Dvorak led a contingent of three Dickinson athletes to the award stand in the shot put. Dvorak threw 54-8½ to beat runner-up Conrad Schwarzkopf of Century by more than four feet.
Dickinson senior Austin Hibl was sixth with a 48-7 and senior Levi Keck was eighth at 47-10.
Dvorak said his win helped him perk up after a disappointing seventh in the javelin (159-6).
“I’m in a better mood than I was after the javelin,” Dvorak said. “I didn’t do very well in the javelin.”
Senior Adam Grimsley took third place in the pole vault with a 13-0.
Senior Amity Lantz contributed a third place in the 100 (13.46) and a fifth in the 200 (27.92) for the Dickinson girls.
Herauf, meanwhile, started the javelin event but left after qualifying for finals to run the 100 hurdles. After getting her award, she was carted back to javelin, where earned another 10 points and defended her state title.
Her performances weren’t bad at all, considering the steady 30 mph wind.
“The wind made us all nervous (in the 100 hurdles),” Herauf said. “It pushed you back while you were striding. It made it hard. It always intimates you, but I’m pretty consistent in it.”
