Garrison Dam's spillway gates have glitch

BISMARCK (AP) — Army Corps of Engineers officials were reopening the Garrison Dam's emergency spillway gates on Thursday, after closing them shortly after they were raised for the first time in history on Wednesday.

The corps says the gates are being used because Lake Sakakawea has almost reached its water storage limit due to heavy spring snowmelt and rain in the Missouri River basin. But the gates had to be closed again because officials determined some maintenance work needed to be done.

The dam's water releases are to gradually rise to 120,000 cubic feet per second on Sunday, and then to 150,000 cfs over the next couple of weeks. Releases on Wednesday averaged about 91,000 cfs.

More than 10 miles of levees are being built in Bismarck-Mandan to guard against major flooding.
