MINOT (AP) — An administrative assistant in the University of North Dakota’s music department is the first employee representative on the state Board of Higher Education.

Janice Hoffarth will be one of two non-voting board members. The other is faculty representative John Girard. Girard is a Minot State University business

professor.

Hoffarth starts July 1. She is a native of Regent and a former president of the UND staff senate. Last year Hoffarth won a statewide award as an outstanding state employee.

This year the Legislature endorsed giving North Dakota university system staffers a non-voting representative on the higher education board. The board has eight voting members.

She was picked by the university system’s staff senate, which includes representatives from all 11 system campuses. She’ll represent more than 8,000 employees.
